Understanding Analysis
In Unit two we focused on the analysis part of writing. Personally as a writer I have always struggled with analysis writing pieces. This unit helped me to understand how to address these writing pieces. Various assignments that we have done throughout unit two have directly shown me how analysis is used in writing.
The specific assignments that we have worked on that have helped me understand analysis the most are the what analysis is/not chart,The New York cover analysis, and our artifact essay. The what analysis is/not chart helped me create a clear distinction of what analysis actually is. It opened my eyes to understanding how analysis is used. It also helped in class to be able to work with other students and talk through what analysis means. The New Yorker cover analysis also helped me gain a better understanding because I had to analyze everything shown and create the meaning of the image/cover. The essay on our artifact put all the pieces we have been learning about analysis together. I chose a commercial that was focused on the double standards women in athletics face. While writing this piece I had to focus on why each athlete was shown in this commercial and the significance it held. Focusing on smaller parts in an essay is something new for me. I am usually focused more on the bigger picture and forget about the smaller details.
At the beginning of the semester I thought analysis was writing mostly summary based. I have learned that analysis is more of focusing on key points and asking questions. While writing analysis pieces I have learned to use a “smaller scope”. This means to look at certain details and avoid the overall meaning. I have differentiated the meaning of analysis through our writing pieces and class discussions. The Writing Analytically book written by David Rosenwasser and Jill Stephen also provided me with a better understanding. I was able to use certain chapters as reference that I continuously went back to while completing our assignments.
Analysis has always been an area that I have struggled with in writing. Our unit two has helped me gain a better understanding of what analysis is and how to write using it. Throughout this unit we have done various writing pieces. Particularly the artifact essay and New York cover analysis helped me the most. I had to use everything learned about analysis on these writing pieces.
