Top Five Lessons
I learned how to properly analyze - In the SUPA WRT 105 course one of the first things we started with was analyzing different aspects of essays and other writing pieces. We learned how to properly do this by using the, Writing Analytically edition book. We read numerous chapters and took notes throughout(flashpoints). We got the opportunity to share these notes with the class and hear from each other. The New Yorker Cover assignment gave us the opportunity to directly analyze the covers. With this assignment we used the writing analytically book pages 84-86 to help us get a better understanding. You can read my piece about The New Yorker cover HERE!
2.) Research using the library resources available online- With many of our writing assignments we had to do research about different topics that would be included to make a proper paper. We used the Syracuse University online library to find these sources. After we found the quote we wanted to use we learned how to use MLA citations. When adding a quote into your paper you have to introduce it and work it into your sentences. This is something I struggled with. An example of this would be our Unit 2 Essays! You can read mine about the double standards in the athletic world HERE!
3.) The importance of reflection and revision- Throughout each assignment we have done this year we got the chance to share our work with our fellow classmates. Although we had to do this through zoom, it significantly helped me as a writer. Hearing someone else read your work aloud made it much easier to figure out my mistakes. It also helped to hear others' opinions on my writing and it made me open to new ideas/concepts.
4.) Op Docs- Before being in this class I have never heard of an Op Doc before. I learned that it was shown by the New York Times as a way to convey an essay in a video format. Personally I absolutely love them because there are many interesting topics to watch and learn about. Specifically these op docs showed me that there are many creative ways to present your message/essay. The op-Doc I loved the most was A conversation with Black Women on Race by Joe Brewster and Michele Stevenson. You can read my full post on this piece HERE!
5.)The Impact of a Single Story- A single story gave insight to me about others' experiences with many forms of dscrimination. Reading directly from someone's discriminatory experience really allowed me to empathize with them. I am very grateful that we covered this especially in our society now. Learning about the single story also taught me how differently people can be treated and how harmful it is.
